Event Overview

As UN Secretary-General, Mr. António Guterres, mentioned at World Cities Day on 31st Oct 2019, more than half the world’s population now lives in urban areas and two thirds will do so by 2050. Cities consume more than two-thirds of the world’s energy, and account for more than 70% of global carbon dioxide emissions.

Three Ministers of China-Japan-Korea agreed to conduct joint research project towards decarbonization at COP22, and then three countries Environmental Ministers agreed on launching the "Joint Research on Cities towards Decarbonization and Sustainable Development" in Joint Communiqué at the 20th Tripartite Environment Ministers Meeting among China, Japan and Korea (TEMM20) in June 2018, Suzhou, China.

National Center for Climate Change Strategy and International Cooperation (NCSC) in China, Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) in Japan, Korea Environment Institute (KEI) in Korea, jointly organized side events at COP23 and COP24, and discussed how we develop research frameworks and outputs for cities towards decarbonization and sustainable development.

This COP25 side event will share the latest research activities, such as "city climate action plan", "good practices on cities towards decarbonization and sustainable development" with several cities in China, Japan and Korea.
