Event Summary
The event introduced the findings of the IEA’s report "The Future of Hydrogen: Seizing Today’s Opportunities" and discuss how to build an enabling environment for businesses and further dissemination of innovative clean energy technologies. Mechthild (IEA) presented the opportunities of hydrogen, which would enable more renewables to be integrated, help decarbonisation in the hard-to-abate sectors, and enhance energy security. She also pointed out some remaining challenges such as costs, infrastructure, and regulatory barriers. She highlighted the importance of policy support and emphasised the potential of clean hydrogen and transportation. She also highlighted the upcoming work on ETP2020, with a focus on hydrogen and CCUS. Paula Abreu-Marques (European Commission), Tomoyoshi Yahagi (Japan), Gaia Puleston (Australia) and Ellina Levina (Clean Energy Ministerial Secretariat) gave presentations highlighting their efforts to build an enabling environment for business and innovative hydrogen technologies. Speakers emphasised the importance of cost reduction by scaling up size and encouraging investment, and regulatory framework which would enable actions to promote hydrogen use in industrial bases. Some speakers also underscored hydrogen within their climate neutrality objective, important for decarbonising industry and transport. Participants also paid attention to the use of hydrogen for the power and transport sectors, enhancing energy security.
