Event title

Real-Time Ground Water Table (GWT) Monitoring at tropical peatlands: Experiences from Indonesia

Contents

In late 2015, the large-scale peatland fires occurred in Indonesia and 2.6 million ha was estimated to be burned with the GHG emissions of more than 1.5 Gt CO2-e, which are higher than the annual emission of Germany. The Government of Indonesia was quick to respond to this disaster by establishing Peatland Restoration Agency (BRG) in January, 2016.
Meanwhile, there is a scientific evidence that the number of hotspots correlates with the GWT and amount of CO2 emissions that are caused by peat decomposition also correlate with the GWT. Furthermore, real-time GWT can be monitored through the analysis of satellite data. Based on such scientific findings and satellite technology, a team of researchers from Indonesia and Japan has been developing a real-time GWT monitoring system that directly contributes to fire risk early warning as well as calculation of CO2 emissions through peat decomposition. This event aims to share the work in progress on the development of the real-time GWL monitoring system.
