Session Summary

The recent IPCC report has demonstrated that climate impacts will continue to worsen around the world, with coastal cities at the forefront of these changes. Rising sea levels, increasing temperatures, the intensification of extreme weather events, and more erratic rainfall are amplifying economic, social, and environmental vulnerability in coastal areas. Small Island Developing States and coastal Least Developed Countries are often the most affected and least able to prepare and respond to climate impacts.
As a result, implementing smart adaptation investments and long-term resilience strategies require detailed information and data to inform decision making. In response, a new decision support tool CORVI has been developed to aid governments, industries, and financial institutions in making targeted investments which prioritize actions that minimize city level risk. The event included a keynote address from Monica Medina, Assistant Secretary at the US State Department as well as remarks from government representatives of Japan, Tanzania, the Philippines, and Bangladesh on the urgent need to build urban coastal resilience. Ms. Sally Yozell from the Stimson Cente also highlighted new CORVI risk assessments in coastal cities in the Pacific and Indian Ocean and East Africa and showcase a new CORVI data portal to help leaders make data-driven investments to build climate resilience and safeguard the future sustainability of coastal cities. A representative from the insurance industry discussed how tools such as CORVI can help investors minimize ocean-derived risk and build and develop new financing mechanisms and insurance products.
