| Title | Adaptation for All: Networking and Involvement of Private Sector |

| Contents | The Paris Agreement for the first time established a global adaptation goal of enhancing adaptive capacity, strengthening resilience and reducing vulnerability to climate change, with a view to contributing to sustainable development and ensuring adequate adaptation response in the context of the temperature goal. The key of accelerating implementation of Adaptation actions is to inspire various stakeholders including but not limited to private sector, local authority and media. Importance of sharing information, good practices, experiences and lessons learned with regard to science, planning, policies and implementation in relation to adaptation actions are highlighted and prescribed in the Paris Agreement. Global Adaptation Network (GAN) and its regional platform, Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN), are the primary platform to meet, share learning and experiences, and work together towards the pertinent outcomes and practical solutions that are needed to address the challenges of climate change. Also, there is recognition that adaptation, sustainable development and disaster risk reduction have many synergies and have to be linked and interfaced. As underlined in the Preamble of Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction, addressing climate change as one of the drivers of disaster risk represents an opportunity to reduce disaster risk in a meaningful and coherent manner throughout the interrelated intergovernmental process. The linkage between sustainable development and disaster risk reduction provide a number of avenues for enhancing societal resilience to natural disasters and climate change and thus represent an opportunity for adaptation incorporating ecosystem based approaches into the agenda. In the first session, key speakers from several countries and international institution will talk about the national adaptation plans, its activities and importance of the networking. In the second-half of the session, high-level speakers from private sector and international organization will share the good practices, opportunities and challenges for addressing adaptation challenges and other global agendas and goals |

| Session Summary |
The key of accelerating implementation of Adaptation actions is to inspire various stakeholders including but not limited to private sector, local authority and media. In the first session, key speakers talked about the knowledge sharing of adaptation through global network, its activities and importance of the networking. H.E. Minister Yamamoto disseminated “Asia Pacific Adaptation Information Platform” under “Japan’s Assistance Initiatives to address Climate Change Responding to Needs of the Developing Countries”. Vice-Minister Kajihara explained the detail of its activities under the Platform. Dr Sunimal from Minister of Mahaweli Development and Environment shared output the 5th Asia Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN) forum held in Colombo and the overview of formulated Sri Lanka’s National Adaptation Plan (NAP) recently. Dr Barney from UN Environment also introduced the activities of Global Adaptation Network (GAN). In the second-half of the session, high-level speakers from private sector and international organization shared the good practices, opportunities and challenges for addressing adaptation challenges and other global agendas and goals. Ms Sandra Wu from Kokusai Kogyo Co. ltd presented their activities in the areas of environmental conservation, disaster risk reduction, low carbon with a view to long-term strategic business opportunities in conjunction with Sendai Framework, SDGs and Paris Agreement. Mr Masahiro Ikeno from NEC Europe showed their ICT’s contribution to the monitoring and prediction in the areas of SDGs and Climate Change with concrete examples, such as Tsunami forecasting in Philippines. Mr Masao Seki from Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance Inc. shared overview of application of climate index for insurance with a few cases, drought in Thailand, banana farming in Philippines etc. In the question-and answer session, for the active private sector involvement, lack of policy/regulation, human and financial resources in developing countries were highlighted as barriers. Needs for provision of adequate and reliable climate risk information was also highlighted in order to urge investment from private sector. |
