Seminar abstract

Abstract

We will discuss the current situation, such as energy supply and use during pandemics and conflict situations, as well as extreme weather events (heatwaves, cyclones, etc.). The impact of new demand-based approaches (faster and more effective outcomes, such as focusing on prevention, co-benefits and well-being provision) versus conventional shows a comparison with its supply-side counterpart. A seminar on energy security based on a number of new perspectives.

Session Summary
Ensuring welfare and access to essential social services is why societies need materials and energy. This seminar will not only guide development towards the well-being of all, but also prepare us to make infrastructure, cities, rural spaces and societies more resilient, and improve energy security and the security of energy services. We have proposed the role of technological, social, and infrastructure innovation that can be played. Regarding the importance of demand-side solutions for the transformation towards net-zero society, several analysis combined with well-being, higher energy security, response to energy crisis with urban building, global-south perspectives are presented and discussed.
The seminar began with a welcome and opening by Nebojsa Nakicenovic( International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA)), who explained the purpose of the seminar, followed by Keigo Akimoto(Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth (RITE)/ Tokyo Institute of Technology), who indicated the importance of analysis and its results about reduction potential of hidden costs in the end-use sector due to demand-side solutions such as digitalization and sharing economy through model analysis. Also, Nuno Bento(DINÂMIA’CET-Iscte) on Greater leverage for energy security with demand-side policies, Diana Ürge-Vorsatz(Central European University/IPCC) on Urban space and society in times of crises: the role of demand-side innovations, and Joyashree Roy(Asian Institute of Technology) on The A report was made on costs and potentials of demand-side interventions from a Global South perspective. Finally, a panel discussion among the five speakers was held, moderated by Nebojsa Nakicenovic.

Message and Results
This seminar at the Japan Pavilion had a large audience, even though it started at 18:00 on the last day of the seminar. In addition, the research results of RITE and other speakers were broadcasted to the world in real-time through online distribution, and the panel discussion was conducted actively in response to the question by the online audience, which was a great success.
In order to improve security, the online distribution utilized Zoom Webinar, and was able to be completed without any problems. Thank you for great support by technical staff.
