Seminar abstract

Abstract

The Joint Crediting System(JCM) implemented by the Government of Japan with 28 partner countries based on a Memorandum of Cooperation has been promoting diffusion of decarbonizing technologies since its start in 2013. Currently, the number of JCM selected JCM Model Projects have reached over 200.
This side event will share latest updates of the JCM including related policies in Japan and partner countries and discuss challenges and cooperations for promoting the JCM under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.

Session Summary
This side event began with an opening remarks by Ms. Maiko Uga from Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ) and Mr. Virender K. Duggal from Asian Development Bank (ADB) delivered a presentation "Report on decarbonization efforts and implementation of the JCM in Asia'' and Ms. Ritsuko Yoneda from Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Japan (MAFF) gave a presentation titled "Perspective of JCM projects in Agriculture sector".
Contiunously, through roundtable discussion facilitated by Mr. Makoto Kato from Overseas Environmental Cooperation Center, Dr. Puttipar Rotkittikhun from Thailand and Ms. Isabella Villanueva from Chile shared latest updates of the JCM including related policies in their countries and all the 5 speakers discussed challenges and cooperations for promoting the JCM and implementing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement.
In particular, increasing climate ambitions of Japan and partner countries by the bilateral cooperations under the JCM and expectations for its promotion and expansion of the JCM including enlarging target sectors and project scale along with the increasing interest in the carbon market in recent years were expressed.
In the end, Dr. Kazuhiko Takemoto from OECC delivered a closing remark to express gratitude about past efforts by partner countries and international organizations under the JCM, and expectation for fruther cooperation with partner countries in the implementation of JCM in accordance with Article 6 of the Paris Agreement, towards a sustainable decarbonized society.
