Session Summary
At the COP26 Japan Pavilion, as one of the technologies and activities that will contribute to the realization of the theme of a decarbonized society, Climate Youth Japan presented its opinions on how to make the Tokyo Olympics and Paralympic Games sustainable (referred to as the Sustainalympics), as communicated at COP23-25. And this time, we focused on the post-Olympics evaluation from the perspective of youth.
We introduced five positive points of the Tokyo 2020 Games, including the realization of carbon negatives, medals made from urban mines, and the spread of forest certification systems. On the other hand, we explained that three points need improvement, including the lack of information dissemination, overdevelopment of the site periphery, and resource procurement, and proposed concrete solutions.
We then discussed how the multifaceted evaluation of the Tokyo 2020 Games can be passed on as a legacy for the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025 scheduled for 2025. In addition, we presented the Sustainable Ambassadors 1 Million Project as a possible approach from the perspective of youth and its future prospects.
Fridays for Future Japan, Japan Youth Platform for Sustainability, and Japan Youth Council were invited as co-organizers to make proposals based on the characteristics of their respective organizations.
Fridays for Future Japan presented proposals based on the theme of the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025, as well as civil society movements surrounding the Tokyo 2020 Games and prospects for the management of further games. Japan Youth Platform for Sustainability presented an analysis of the results of a survey based on the opinions of youth in Japan and abroad regarding the Tokyo 2020 Games and the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025, and Japan Youth Council presented an examination of the Tokyo 2020 Games and the Osaka-Kansai Expo 2025 from the perspective of transportation, roads, and waste.
Message and Results
In recent years, while the will of young people has been strongly communicated to society, we think that the key to building a better future is to create an environment of co-creation, not division. We believe that repeated dialogue between people from different perspectives is the first step and want to actively engage with them on a variety of topics.
