Event Schedule - COP25 JAPAN PAVILION
2019.12.06
Ocean and Climate Change – Contribution of the Space Technology
Organizer
- Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF)
- Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)
Event Overview
When considering the impacts of climate change on the ocean and coastal areas such as sea ice reduction, extreme weather, sea level rise, and ocean heatwaves, space technology that can monitor the wide area efficiently is indispensable. Based on the latest knowledge of the IPCC’s Special Report on Ocean and Cryosphere (SROCC), we will discuss the possibility of Japan's leading satellite remote sensing technology and its international contribution to climate change mitigation and adaptation.
Speaker
- Dr. Atsushi Sunami, Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF), President
- Mr. Takeshi Hirabayashi, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Director for Satellite Applications
- Hon. Loren Legarda, House of Representatives of the Philippines, Deputy Speaker
- Mr. Kazuo Umesawa, Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), Associate Senior Engineer
- Ms. Nagisa Yoshioka, Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF), Research Fellow
- Dr. Alan Boyd, Department of Environment, Forestry and Fisheries, South Africa, Specialist Scientist
- Dr. Srinivasan Ancha, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Principal Climate Change Specialist
- Mr. Tomohiko Tsunoda (MC), Ocean Policy Research Institute of the Sasakawa Peace Foundation (OPRI-SPF), Senior Research Fellow
Event Summary
OPRI-SPF and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) co-hosted the "Ocean and Climate Change - Contribution of Space Technology" side event. Discussion centered on how space technology can be used to gauge the impacts of climate change on the oceans and coastal areas. Following opening remarks by the co-organizers, OPRI President Atsushi Sunami and Mr. Takeshi Hirabayashi, Director of the JAXA Satellite Applications and Operations Center (SAOC), the Hon. Loren Legarda, Lower House Representative and Deputy Speaker of the Philippines House of Representatives, gave the Keynote Speech on the effects of climate change on the ocean and coastal zones of the Philippines. Mr. Kazuo Umezawa, Associate Senior Engineer at JAXA, introduced objects and results from Japan’s earth observation satellites, using examples of changes in Arctic Ocean sea ice to give a comprehensive overview of its satellite remote sensing technology. Panelists presented the findings of the IPCC Special Report on the Oceans and Cryosphere, the foundation for the event’s discussions and ADB's new initiatives on the ocean. In the discussions, moderated by OPRI President Sunami, there was a lively exchange of ideas based on the latest science concerning promotion of the use of satellite remote sensing technologies in climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.
