Event Summary
At the beginning, Mr. Satoru Morishita, Vice Minister for Global Environmental Affairs, Ministry of the Environment, Japan gave an opening remark touching on the importance of improving the transparency of the private sector to create opportunities for co-innovation as well as the background of establishing the Partnership to Strengthen Transparency for co-Innovation (PaSTI). He also expressed his hope that the discussion at this side event would lead to the development of the PaSTI initiative in the future.
Ms. Helen Mountford, Vice President, Climate and Economics, World Resources Institute (WRI) mentioned "data and the ambition loop" to promote climate action in her opening remark, where accurate data are important not only to achieve the long-term goal of the Paris Agreement but also for international trust, and domestic planning and progress tracking with emphasizing that collaboration between government and the private sector is essential for improving data accuracy and ambition. She also stated that the PaSTI in Indonesia is an activity that strengthens this loop and expansion of this initiative to other countries and regions would be expected.
In the panel discussion session, Dr. Kazuhiko Takemoto, President of the Overseas Environmental Cooperation Center (OECC) gave a keynote speech by introducing the background and concept of PaSTI, bilateral activities in Indonesia, Vietnam and the Philippines, as well as multilateral activities for the ASEAN region. He further emphasized that it is important to extend the transparency actions not only to global companies but also to local small-medium sized companies.
Ms. Yamide Dagnet, Senior Associate, WRI, as moderator for the panel discussion invited the panelists including Ms. Sudhiani Pratiwi, Deputy Director of Environment Quality and Climate Change, Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS), Indonesia, Ms. Rohaya Saharom, Deputy Director of Resource Conservation Department, National Environment Agency(NEA), Singapore, Mr. Takashi Hongo, Senior Fellow, Mitsui & Co. Global Strategic Studies Institute, and Dr. Kazuhiko Takemoto, OECC. The panelists shared the progress of the PaSTI project in Indonesia and ASEAN region, and discussed the need for further collaboration between the private sector, including small-medium enterprises, and the government, and co-innovation where technologies and know-how are bidirectionally exported between developing and developed countries.
