Event Summary

IUCN and CEM convened a high-level panel to mark the tenth anniversary of the concept and definition of EbA. The Minister of Environment Japan, Yoshiaki Harada, opened the event, followed by statements from BMU IKI. IUCN Vice President and Adviser to the Prime Minister on Climate Change from Pakistan, Malik Amin Aslam, chaired the panel session, comprised of Lina Pohl, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, El Salvador; Ronald Jumeau, Permanent Ambassador to the UN, Ministry of Foreing Affairs, Seychelles; Silvia Zuñiga, Climate Change Direction, Ministry of Environment and natural Resources, Guatemala; and Ruth Ihren, Nature Conservation and Sustainable Use of Natural Resources, Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Germany. The speakers shared how in each of their countries, EbA is being mainstreamed through partnerships and initiatives such as El Salvador’s advocacy for the International Decade for Ecosystem Restoration 2021-2030, El Salvador’s National Council for its Restoration Program, Pakistan’s Billion Tree Tsunami initiative, and Seychelles’ successes in private sector uptake of EbA, etc.
