Event Overview

Sustainable + Olympics/Paralympics = Sustainalympics. We created this word to show our hope to make the Tokyo 2020 Games a sustainable one. Climate Youth Japan has dealt with sustainalympics at Japan Pavilion for three years .This year, we tried to make a platform to pass on the legacies and lessons to future Olympics in Beijing, Paris, Los Angeles, following the Tokyo 2020 Games.
In the first part, we explained the Olympism and the history of the relation between Olympics and Environment. Then, we introduced the action by Japanese youth.
In the second part, we examine the sustainability of Tokyo Olympics 2020 and grope the ideal way in terms of various aspects such as carbon footprint based on past instances.
In the final part, we presented the role of youth towards Olympic games through the discussion among youth all over the world during COY14 and COP24

Event Summary

The theme of the presentation by Climate Youth Japan was “Creation of a Sustainable Olympics Youth Movement starting from the Tokyo 2020 Games”.
First of all, we introduced workshops and other initiatives to realize “Sustainable Olympics = Sustainalympics “, which the CYJ has held jointly with domestic Youth Olympic organizations.
In addition, we also introduced a workshop at “Conference of Youth 14” held before COP 24 and also presented discussion among youth around the world on Sustainable Olympics.
We also introduced cases of youth action from Japan and Korea.
As Japanese youth, we pointed that the transport sector is not properly included in the framework for calculating the greenhouse gas emissions of the Tokyo Olympic Games.
From Korea, members of Green Environment Youth Korea reported cases such as youth initiatives to warn of sediment - related disasters carried out during the Pyeongchang Olympics in this year.
We emphasize not only the cases of Japan and South Korea but also that we need to inherit the legacy of the Olympic Games to link Youth’s Sustainalympics to Tokyo Olympic Games.

Message

At this event, we focused only on low carbonization of Olympics as a challenge of the Tokyo Olympic Games from the viewpoint of sustainability, but there are other issues on Sustainable Sourcing Code.As Japanese youths, we try to solve those problems by proposal and educational activities, also creating carbon offset examples.Furthermore, we will take advantage of the network of youth connected throughout this conference, and will also take over the legacy and lessons to following Olympics.
