Title | Sustainable Development to Realize "Net Zero Anthropogenic Emissions of CO2" and Ideal Innovation for the Future - Launch Event of the Roadmap Developed by Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF) – |
---|---|
Contents | The Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF) is an international forum created with the cooperation of businesses, academia and governments and aims to achieve net zero anthropogenic emissions of CO2. The discussions in ICEF focus on the sustainable development of society and the importance of innovation and international cooperation to support this. ICEF has also developed two roadmaps on CO2 utilization and net zero energy buildings and homes. In this event, we will reveal the two roadmaps and share the discussions and insights provided within ICEF, as well as discuss the ideal types of innovation in the future. |

Session Summary |
Mr. Hiroyuki Suematsu introduced an overview of ICEF, and then emphasized a desirable role of innovation and the importance of international cooperation. Mr. Makoto Watanabe called for the participants to realize net zero CO2 emissions, strengthen international cooperation between international initiatives and ICEF, and take action immediately, as an outcome of the third annual meeting last month. Dr. Hoesung Lee, IPCC Chair, reported the current status of the 1.5 degrees special report development for consultation to the Paris Agreement from the standpoint of the scientific community. And also he stated that we are required to identify and overcome financial/institutional barriers to achieve zero carbon emissions. Prof. David Sandalow and Dr. Issam Dairanieh debuted the CO2 Utilization Roadmap, indicating that in 2030 the total potential amount of CO2 utilization would reach 15% of the global emissions of the current level. There was also a comment on the importance of analysis in CO2 life cycle considered. Dr. Atsushi Kurosawa presented the ZEB/ZEH Roadmap for achievement of net-zero energy consumption in buildings. Providing primary concern over the moderate/humid regions in Asia and Africa, with expectation of energy demand rise, it presented different roadmaps of air conditioning by climate zone and showed the targets respectively from four technology approaches; domestic appliances, structural/building approaches, renewables integration, and energy management. In the panel discussion, there were indications on new constructions increase in developing countries, best localization by region or technology, and benefit of such practical approaches as ICEF toward net zero emissions. It was introduced that IEA had 21 roadmaps (including building envelope) with common challenges in technological advancement, financial/human resources, and political support. From the floor, a question about fundraising of developing countries was posed and there was an implication that international support could help by running together with city development in the case of ZEB/ZEH. |
Key Messages |
ICEF works as an international platform to tackle climate change through innovation. We are delighted to announce that ICEF developed two original roadmaps “CO2 Utilization” and “ZEB/ZEH” going through the third annual meeting last month, each of which shows the desirable direction of innovation in the relevant area. In this event, a common understanding was shared that everyone around the world should take action immediately to solve climate change issues. And also there were appeals for strengthening collaborative relationships between various international initiatives and promoting innovation in short, mid- and long term. |
