National Adaptation Plan and Role of Communication

Outline

The event will consist of two sessions. In the first session, key speakers from Japan, Mongolia/Indonesia (tentative) and Thailand will talk about the national adaptation plans and activities, respectively. The speaker from Ministry of the Environment, Japan, Dr Akio Takemoto, will present an overview of the National Adaptation Plan in Japan which was recently drafted and will also address the ongoing adaptation programme. The guest speakers will share the situation of climate change and existing adaptation activities in each country.

Panel discussion will take place in the second session focusing the topic on the role of communication in climate change adaptation. An effective and efficient communication strategy enables societies to share knowledge and practices nationwide, and contribute to the development of an adaptation strategy whilst individual efforts are essential for climate change adaptation among the different layers of citizens, regions and the private sector. With reference to the described adaptation activities in the first half, the speakers in the first session will discuss their communication strategies and ideas together with invited weather forecasters from Asian nations.

Summary

At the beginning, H.E. Ms. Tamayo Marukawa, Minister of the Environment, Japan, delivered the opening speech. In the first session, key speakers from Japan, Indonesia, Mongolia and Thailand talked about the national adaptation planning and activities, respectively. The speaker from Ministry of Environment, Japan, Dr Akio Takemoto, made presentation on an overview of the National Adaptation Plan in Japan which was recently formulated as a Cabinet Decision and also addressed the ongoing adaptation programmes. The guest speakers shared the impact of climate change and existing adaptation activities in each country.

Panel discussion took place in the second session focusing the topic on the role of communication towards promoting adaptation in each country. An effective and efficient communication strategy enables societies to share knowledge and practices nationwide, and contribute to the development of an adaptation strategy whilst individual efforts are essential for climate change adaptation in the different layers of citizens, regions and the private sector. With reference to the described adaptation activities in the first half, the panelists discussed their communication strategies and ideas.
