Contents | Since the launch of GOSAT in 2009, an operational and global satellite observation of CO2 and methane have become possible. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) launched OCO-2 in 2014 and China launched Tansat in 2016. In addition to these satellites, the European Space Agency (ESA), the Center National d’ Etudes Spatiales (CNES), and German Aerospace Center (DLR) will launch satellites which are capable of monitoring Greenhouse Gases (GHG) for continuous observation from space. The 2006 IPCC Guidelines described the satellites have “limitations in spatial, vertical and temporal resolution” and did not indicate satellite GHG data to use for the verification of an inventory reporting. However, after the launch of GOSAT, satellite GHG observation made technical and scientific advancements which indicates that satellite GHG data is beneficial for supporting the accuracy of Inventories; therefore, space agencies should advocate those technical advancements and achievements made in past several years. JAXA invites representatives from space agencies to present their satellite GHG observation programs and to show the public that the satellite GHG observation is sustainable and capable to support enhancement of the transparency of framework and an effective implementation of the Paris agreement. |
