Event title

Addressing Climate Change Issues through Innovation
- Release Event of the Roadmap Developed by Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF) –

Contents

Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF) is an international forum in cooperation by business, academia and government and aims for achievement the global Net-Zero Anthropogenic Emissions of CO2. The discussions in ICEF focus on importance of innovation and international cooperation to address climate change issues. Besides, ICEF has developed two original roadmaps on CO2 Utilization (version 2.0) and Energy Storage this year.

In this event, we will launch these two roadmaps and share the discussions and insight provided in ICEF, and will discuss desirable innovation to come.

Session Summary

Mr. Ogushi introduced ICEF and stated that the roadmaps are important results. Dr. Lee mentioned that IPCC is preparing a 1.5 degree special report and the 6th Assessment Reports, and showed his expectations that the two roadmaps would encourage concrete actions to address climate change. Mr. Watanabe introduced ICEF2017 overview.

Prof. Sandalow and Dr. Friedman jointly presented an overview of the CO2 utilization roadmap. They introduced that possible application areas for CO2 utilization are building materials, chemicals, and carbon materials and pointed out that further approaches such as lifecycle assessment and standardization are needed. Dr. Kurosawa reported an overview of the energy storage roadmap and introduced energy storage technologies as the key to realize a low-carbon energy system and three application areas of power systems, transportation and heat storage. He pointed out the importance of institutions development for securing flexibility of power systems, and deploying zero emission vehicles and district heating systems.

Prof. Sandalow, Dr. Kurosawa, Mr. Turk and Dr. Korhola joined the panel and discussed needs of more government funds for energy-related R&D and more international collaborations in R&D, roles of ICT and digitalization, and expectations toward ICEF.

Key Messages
  • Net zero emissions through technology innovations is the key element to achieve the Paris Agreement goal.
  • Roadmaps provide important information on research and development status and milestones as well as policy measures.
  • CO2 utilization technologies can be applied to building materials, commodity chemicals and carbon materials.
  • Energy storage is essential technology to realize a low-carbon energy system in the power systems, transportation and heat utilization.
  • In order to address climate change, CO2 net-zero emissions is needed. International collaboration for innovation and prompt actions are also indispensable.
