Session Summary

In the Keynote presentation, Prof. Hayashi explained about “The Limit to Urbanization and Motorization”, and recommended EcoDrive as one measure to overcome the limitation. In the following session, Mr. Maruyama of EcoMO Foundation made a presentation on “Low Carbon Transport Initiatives of EcoMo Foundation in Japan”.

During the panel discussion in the second half, we discussed how we can spread EcoDrive Declaration, which was adopted by UN WAFUNIF. At the beginning, Mr. Takahashi, Global Project Producer of Asua, explained the purpose of the panel discussion and the content of EcoDrive Declaration. Then, Mr. Maji, President of Asua, explained the circumstances how EcoDrive Declaration was settled. In addition to it, he introduced his efforts to spread EcoDrive. Mr. Yoshida, WAFUNIF Goodwill Ambassador, explained how WAFUNIF met EcoDrive, why WAFUNIF held UN EcoDrive Conference, and also explained the effect obtained by spreading Eco Drive Declaration world-wide. Mr. Oba, Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association INC., introduced the efforts of Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association for EcoDrive and its involvement with EcoDrive. Mr. Maruyama of EcoMo Foundation made a comment for EcoDrive as attendant of the First UN EcoDrive Conference. At the end, Prof. Hayashi, Professor of Chubu University, gave an advice for the spread of EcoDrive Declaration from the objective point.

In the question-and-answer session, 2 comments were made by attendants from Africa. The first one was following. Because traffic accident death is the second highest cause of death, and young people tend to drive fast, he wishes to introduce EcoDrive at the earliest convenience. The second one, because he is not sure how he can introduce EcoDrive, and he does not understand the methodology, he wishes for the start from the capacity building.

Key Messages
  • We need to position EcoDrive for the measure against the limitation of urbanization and mortarization.
  • In Japan, great efforts by EcoMo Foundation, Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, and Asua have contributed to the reduction of the discharge by the transport section.
  • By spreading Eco Drive Declaration adopted by UN WAFUNIF and the efforts of EcoDrive to developing countries in which the amount of discharge is increasing sharply in the transport section, Japan wishes to contribute to the prevention of global warming.
