Abstract

This seminer will present the outcomes of the 10th Annual Meeting of the Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF), held by METI and NEDO on October 4-5, 2023. First, METI and NEDO will introduce the policies, innovations and technologies for net-zero emissions discussed at ICEF through "Tokyo GX Week." Afterwards, the final version of the ICEF Roadmap - Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Climate Change Mitigation Roadmap - will be presented, followed by an expert panel discussion.

Session Summary

This seminar presented the outcomes of the 10th Annual Meeting of the Innovation for Cool Earth Forum (ICEF) in October 2023 and released the ICEF Roadmap, which focuses on the latest technologies that contribute to decarbonization. This year's ICEF Roadmap, titled "Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Climate Change Mitigation," analyzes how artificial intelligence, such as Chat GPT and other generative AI, can contribute to climate change mitigation.
The event began with opening remarks by Mr. KOBAYASHI Izuru, Deputy Director-General for Technology and Environment, METI, followed by a special speech by Dr. Noel Bakhtian, Director of Tech Acceleration, the Bezos Earth Fund on the importance of innovation and technology in the field of climate change. Next, Mr. YOSHIOKA Masatsugu, Executive Director of NEDO, gave a presentation on NEDO's activities for the climate change field. Then, Mr. David Sandalow, ICEF Steering Committee, presented the ICEF roadmap with some authors: Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Climate Change Mitigation". During the panel discussion, it was extensively discussed that AI has the potential to contribute to climate change in all areas, including power generation, transmission, manufacturing, and energy storage. The panelists also shared the importance of information management and security as the use of AI expands in the near future.
