Session Summary
The theme of the seminar, "How the semi-aerobic landfill structure, Fukuoka Method, will contribute to reducing methane gas emissions and improving the urban living environment," was discussed in depth through keynote speeches by experts in methane reduction promotion activities and overseas support for Fukuoka Method introduction. Latest information and case studies on the Fukuoka Method were shared by international organizations and cities that have actually used the Fukuoka Method, followed by a panel discussion.
In the keynote speeches, the experts gave their unique opinions and recommendations on methane reduction, the effectiveness of the Fukuoka Method and its future development. UN-Habitat introduced the efforts of the African Clean Cities Platform (ACCP), and ADB/UNIDO introduced its financial support scheme for methane gas reduction. In addition, cities that have introduced the Fukuoka Method and organisations that are supporting its introduction made presentations on the necessity of building cooperative relationships with local staff and residents, and on the necessity of passing on the technology to local staff, based on their experiences.
During the panel discussion, the participants reaffirmed that the Fukuoka Method can be a solution for developing countries facing challenges in waste management and the living environment, and also had a meaningful time discussing the importance of human resource development as the most important factor in improving waste management, the need for cities introducing the method to establish a project implementation system, and the need for all players involved in the project to continue working together to address waste management issues.
Message and Results
The seminar was broadcast via zoom webinar with simultaneous interpretation in English, French and Japanese, and attracted a high level of interest, with over 100 people watching from all over the world. The materials used in the seminar are available on the Fukuoka City website.
The Fukuoka Method Global Network, established by the Ministry of the Environment, UN-Habitat, Fukuoka City and others, plans to hold more webinars on the Fukuoka Method in the future, so we look forward to your participation.
