Seminar abstract
The MOE Japan and the Asia-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM) project team have been supporting the development and update of nationally determined contributions (NDCs) and long-term strategies (LTS) in several countries in Asia including Japan. To promote actions on the ground, we have also been supporting cities in this region in devising their own strategies for carbon neutrality.
At the regional level, the ASEAN State of the Climate Change Report (ASCCR) was successfully released last year as a collaborative product of the ASEAN Secretariat and Japan. In response to the request of the continued support in this domain by the ASEAN Member States (AMS), the ASEAN Secretariat and Japan will work together in developing the ASEAN Climate Change Strategic Action Plan 2023-2030 (ACCSAP) by COP28 in 2023, building upon the ASEAN Working Group on Climate Change (AWGCC) Action Plan (AAP) 2019-2025 and sectoral action plans. The ACCSAP will play a key role in the development and update of NDCs and LTS to realise ASEAN’s long-term goal of achieving carbon neutrality and resiliency.
This side event aims to announce the development of the ACCSAP to the international community, and to consider how to bridge AIM and the ACCSAP in a holistic manner. The guiding document for ACCSAP development will be presented in the event to clarify the consultative development process and to seek for inputs from the audience. The latest progress on LTS development and updates by AMS with the use of AIM will also be shared.
In addition, this side event will highlight the AIM project team’s work in several ASEAN municipalities, introducing the developed quantitative future scenarios and the subsequent actions toward decarbonization taken as a result.
