Session Summary

Green Hydrogen energy will assist many countries in the world to reach its net-zero emissions target by 2050 and limit Global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. It will facilitate the integration of renewable produced energy by contributing to clean industries & storing energy on a large scale. Green Hydrogen can help developing countries and emerging economies like Egypt, which has great potential to be Hydrogen Hub in the Middle East, thereby enhancing Egypt’s national energy security, and addressing climate mitigation objectives. To provide a platform for policy dialogue and knowledge sharing between Japan and Egypt on this area JICA Egypt office organized this side event on “Green Hydrogen Energy Development” on the de-carbonization day at COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh in Japan Pavilion. The event included distinguished speakers from Egypt and Japan.
Dr. Ahmed MOHINA from the Ministry of Electricity and Renewable Energy in Egypt highlighted the Egyptian government recent developments related to Green Hydrogen Energy and explained how Egypt has a considerable potential to be one of the main players in Hydrogen Energy production and possesses the required building blocks for Hydrogen energy production. From Japan Ms. KUDO Rie gave a brief explanation on Kitakyushu City’s Efforts to Realize a Hydrogen-based Society. Ms. KUDO highlighted the lessons learnt from the different projects and activities such as; supply of hydrogen to the urban area via pipelines with the cooperation of gas companies, demonstration of multi-purpose and multiple units operation of pure hydrogen fuel cells, in addition to demonstration of small mobility (forklifts, bicycles) using Hydrogen as fuels and installed Hydrogen fuel cells in apartment units which is currently used for trial living by residents who wish to move to live in Kitakyushu City. Ms. KUDO emphasized the importance of government’s strong commitment to promote Hydrogen-based society through their policy so that they could build the concrete platform to get multiple stakeholders involved in hydrogen supply chain development. To highlight the role of the private sector which is a main key player in Green Hydrogen energy development, Mr. SAITO Hidenori, the Chairman of Japan Business Association in Egypt shared the perspectives of Japanese private Sector in the activities related to local production and local consumption of hydrogen in Japan and other countries in addition to highlighting the incentives that can encourage more private sector participation from Japan to Egypt particularly in the field of hydrogen supply chain development within Egypt.
Not to forget the role of academia and research, Prof. Mona IBRAHIM from Egypt-Japan University of Science and Technology highlighted the role of Higher Education institutes such as E-JUST in raising awareness and building knowledge of hydrogen energy and actions to tackle Climate Change. E-JUST builds Knowledge in Hydrogen Energy through various research activities and educational content. In addition to this, E-JUST tackles climate change through various projects (including Grant Aid Project “The Project for Introduction of Clean Energy by Solar Electricity Generation System”) and ideas for the sustainability in E-JUST Campus and Public Raising Awareness activities.
Finally, Mr. KATO Ken Chief Representative of JICA Egypt and Yemen offices, who moderated the whole side event, explained the importance of working together and sharing the knowledge and experience of Japan with several stakeholders and counterparts in Egypt and other countries through JICA knowledge co-creation programs in order to realize competent and experienced human resources who are able to drive the required energy transition.
