Event Summary

This seminar introduced the best practices driven by the private sectors in Japan, to share how the private sectors can contribute to the seven sectors of climate change adaptation. The technologies and projects of 8 companies, covering 6 sectors (resilient infrastructure, sustainable energy supply, food security, health & sanitation, climate monitoring and early warning, sustainable water supply)  were presented.

In addition, panel discussion was held to discuss and share ideas how we can promote adaptation activities, especially focusing on renewable energy and adaptation. The panelists were from the private sector (Challenergy Inc. and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems Ltd.) and the public sector (International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan), moderated by the consultant, Nippon Koei Co., Ltd. It was presented from the public sector that the market potential of adaptation and renewable energy is huge and expanding, and the public sector could support the seed money for technology development and project studies as well as support for transmitting information of the best practices of Japanese companies. The private sector mentioned that seed money and support in the early stage of technical development and project studies are effective, while further extension depends very much on continuous technical development and innovations, more successful showcases, improvement of efficiency and reliability, and reduction of cost.

From the floor, there was a request to introduce such best practices into the participant's country, and it was agreed with the organizers to exchange the information of potential companies with technlogy and needs in the target country so that the concrete projects can be realized.
