Title Ecosystem based Adaptation – Planning & Evaluating Impacts
Contents Ecosystem based Adaptation (EbA) is being increasingly recognised as an effective approach for enhancing the climate resilience of communities and ecosystems. Thus, it is critical to have standardised tools and methodologies for effectively planning and executing EbA options. During this event, experts from the field will present the tools and methodologies being employed and discuss associated challenges and opportunities.

Summary
This event was organized by IUCN – International Union for Conservation of Nature through the platform of FEBA – Friends of EbA. The proceedings began with the host, the Japanese Ministry of Environment, welcoming the participants and making opening remarks.
Then the moderator, Dr. Andrew Taber, CEO The Mountain Institute, introduced the event and its objectives. He emphasized the critical role of ecosystem and its services for effective adaptation and reducing vulnerabilities of humans. The panellists included, Angela Andrade – Commission on Ecosystem Management, Dr. Klaus Radunsky – Austria and Member UNFCCC Adaptation Committee, Dr. Barney Dickson – UNEP, Dr. Karen Tscherning – German Ministry of Environment BMUB-IKI, Edward Perry – Birdlife, and Dr. Pradeep Kurukulasuriya – UNDP.
Through an interactive session, the panellists discussed opportunities and challenges to facilitate implementation of the Paris Agreement by employing EbA approaches. The general consensus was that ecosystem based approaches contribute towards not only enhancing the adaptive resilience of humans but also in reducing disaster risks and positively impacting on local economies which are based on natural resource management. Further, it was pointed out that there was a need to document evidence and carry out economic analysis for cost-benefit breakdown to support the case for Ecosystem based Adaptation. It was stressed that building linkages with non-traditional partners such as the business community was the need of the hour. The presentations were followed by a Q&A session.
In the end, the moderator thanked the Ministry of Environment, Japan on behalf of FEBA and IUCN for its hospitality.
Key
Messages
Ecosystem based Adaptation (EbA) contributes towards both climate adaptation and mitigation as it is based on use of ecosystem services and biodiversity conservation.

Making an economic case for ecosystem based approaches is critical for its further promotion and mainstreaming into adaptation planning processes.

Engagement with the private sector is vital for making a business case for adaptation through ecosystem based approaches.

Ecosystem based Adaptation is a unique approach as it links all three major UN conventions i.e. UNFCCC, CBD, and UNCCD, with its premise on ecosystem conservation and management for reducing climate risks, promoting biodiversity conservation, and combating land degradation.
