Seminar abstract

Abstract

As indicated by the IPCC Sixth Assessment Synthesis Report, a 65% reduction in global CO2 emissions by 2035 is needed to limit the global average temperature increase to 1.5℃. To realize this goal, all actors must work together to strengthen and accelerate their efforts.
In addition, addressing climate change issues is deeply related to biodiversity conservation, resource recycling, and environmental preservation of water and forests, which increasingly calls upon society as a whole to promote all possible solutions.
At this event, diverse members of the Japan Climate Initiative (JCI), a coalition of Japanese non-state actors including corporations, local governments, universities, and NGO/NPOs, will share their own efforts to realize the 1.5℃ goal. From the perspective of their respective sectors, they will discuss how Japanese society as a whole should work to contribute to the realization of a sustainable decarbonized society.

Session Summary
As indicated by the IPCC Sixth Assessment Synthesis Report, a 65% reduction in global CO2 emissions by 2035 is needed to limit the global average temperature increase to 1.5C. To realize this goal, all actors must work together to strengthen and accelerate their efforts.
In addition to accelerating their own reduction efforts, non-state actors are now expected to work with and inspire their peers and actively seek the necessary changes and policies from trade associations and governments.
At this event, the Japan Climate Initiative (JCI), a coalition of non-state actors in Japan, including corporations, financial institutions, local governments, and NGOs, discussed what efforts are required of non-state actors and what the necessary policies are to achieve the 1.5°C target, especially to ensure reductions in the medium term, such as 2030 and 2035.
At the beginning of the event, JCI Co-Representative Sergio Shigeo Kato presented the "JCI Carbon Pricing Proposal: Toward Simultaneous Achievement of 2030 GHG Emission Reduction Targets and Enhanced International Competitiveness," which was endorsed by 186 JCI member organizations to call for improvements to the current carbon pricing policy proposal by the Japanese government.
In the panel session that followed, a variety of speakers from Japan and abroad, including JCI members, shared their own efforts to achieve mid-term targets such as 2030 and 2035. They also expressed their expectations of the Japanese government and what policies are needed from the perspective of their respective sectors.
Message and Results
"The Carbon Pricing Proposal: Toward Simultaneous Achievement of 2030 GHG Emission Reduction Targets and Enhanced International Competitiveness” that Japan Climate Initiative (JCI) released was endorsed by 186 JCI members (140 companies, 9 local governments, 37 organizations and NGOs, etc.) .
The results of the Global Stocktake concluded at COP28 require the Parties to further strengthen their emission reduction targets and policies. As its inevitable part, JCI expects that the Japanese government introduces a carbon pricing system in Japan as the JCI's proposal called for without missing the right moment.
