Session Summary

The third UN Climate and SDG Synergies Conference “Third Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” was held in Tokyo on July 2022 (https://www.un.org/en/climate-sdgs-conference-2022).
The Conference was co-convened by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) and the Secretariat of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), and it was hosted by the Ministry of the Environment of Japan, in partnership with the United Nations University (UNU) and the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES). The Conference was attended by around 2000 participants, including more than 130 speakers from over 100 countries around the world.
Participants highlighted that synergistic implementation of climate action and the SDGs should be based on:

  1. Strengthening the evidence base for synergistic action
  2. Convening multi-stakeholder dialogues at all levels,
  3. Enhancing integrated planning,
  4. Partnerships for transformation,
  5. Informing key intergovernmental processes on climate and the SDGs.

In this side event, we will share synergetic actions from ASEAN and the Asia-Pacific towards sustainable development. In addition, we will discuss further how to contribute to structuring a “Carbon Neutral Planet”.

Message and Results

Various synergistic actions on climate change and SDGs have already taken place in ASEAN and Asia Pacific, and through this side event, best practices were introduced to stakeholders in the Middle East and various other regions to discuss building a sustainable and carbon-neutral planet.
In particular, after sharing the outcomes of the“Third Global Conference on Strengthening Synergies between the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development” held in Tokyo in July 2022, specific examples of zero-carbon city district development in Kuala Lumpur and information sharing through atmospheric model development targeting Gwangju City were introduced, and a lively discussion ensued, with the need to develop synergistic actions from a more comprehensive approach from a youth perspective being pointed out.
