Large Scale CCS Demonstration Project
in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido, Japan
CCS, an acronym for Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage, is a technology that captures CO2 emitted from sources such as factories and power plants before it is released in the atmosphere, transports it to formations suitable for geological storage, and stores it stably over a very long period. CCS is receiving attention as a key global warming countermeasure capable for reducing CO2 on a large scale.
In Japan, a CCS demonstration project, has been underway since 2012 in Tomakomai City, Hokkaido.
High purity CO2 is captured from a gas containing CO2 emitted from a refinery, compressed and injected from onshore into two offshore sub-seabed formations at depths of approximately 1,000 and 2,400 meters.
